Churches

Whilst the church of England was the established form of worship, non-conformism was very strong in the mining communities, other churches and chapels appeared almost as soon as the colliery houses, these were normally very simple buildings but nevertheless were centres of fervent worship, some are still in use today, these are St Paul's CE church, St Patrick's RC Church, Independent Methodist church, St Cuthbert's Methodist church and the Pentecostal Church.

Churches long since gone are:- the Methodist church opposite the the old store and just down from the present St Cuthbert's, there was another opposite Nelson St called the Independent Methodists this later went to Cliff Road and still stands today, there was another Methodist Church in Taylor St next to the old Cauldknuckles school, this was one of the larger Churches built around this time and had large pipe-organ and gas lights the pipe-organ was moved to the present St Cuthbert's Church where it is still in use today

Hear are pictures of the churches today.
