Hospitals Cherry Knowle Hospital In 1895, partly due to the good rail communications at that time a mental hospital was built to serve a large area of the country, this was known as the Sunderland Lunatic Asylum later this changed and today is known as Cherry Knowle Hospital, this was a magnificent building built facing south on a site that covered 1400 acres and over looking the dene below , over the years satellite units were built around the grounds, Proposals for the new 216 bed Hospital have been
given the go ahead by Sunderland Council in July 2003. Work is
now due to start in 2007.
Ryhope General Hospital Next to the mental hospital is the Ryhope General Hospital this was built as a temporary wooden building in 1939/40 as an emergency hospital for the wartime casualties and still stands today but its days are numbered as it is to be demolished and will be replaced by the new Hospital, some of the buildings have already gone. Between the two hospitals and across the road is the Water Pumping station museum.
